Unlock a PDF

Tired of typing the same password every time you open a statement? Enter it once and save a copy without encryption — or lift print and copy restrictions.

or drop PDFs here

Processed in your browser — files are never uploaded.

How to use Unlock PDF

  1. 1

    Choose the protected PDF.

  2. 2

Type its open password (leave empty if it only has print or copy restrictions).

  3. 3

Press Unlock PDF and download the unprotected copy.

Two kinds of PDF passwords

An open (user) password stops the file from being displayed at all. A permissions (owner) password lets anyone open the file but asks viewers to block printing, copying or editing. Unlock PDF removes both: give it the open password if there is one, and leave the field empty for files that only carry restrictions.

This is not password cracking

FileSwiftly does not guess or bypass open passwords. If you do not know the password of an encrypted file, it cannot be unlocked here — ask the sender for it. Only unlock documents you are entitled to use.

Why unlock at all

Many tools, including merging and compressing, cannot work on encrypted files. Bank and payroll statements are often protected with your date of birth or tax number; an unlocked copy is easier to archive, search and attach to applications. Remember the copy is no longer protected, so store it accordingly.

How it works

Decryption is done by QPDF compiled to WebAssembly, running in your browser tab. The password and the file never leave your device.

Unlock PDF: frequently asked questions

What if I typed the wrong password?

The tool tells you the password is incorrect and lets you try again. Nothing is changed.

Which encryption types are supported?

All standard PDF encryption: RC4 40/128-bit and AES 128/256-bit.

Can I unlock several PDFs at once?

Yes, as long as they share the same password (or have none, only restrictions).

Does unlocking change the content?

No. Pages, text, images and form fields are kept exactly; only encryption is removed.
